Report: Developing global retail destinations

As more consumers demand convenient shopping solutions, retailers must adapt by integrating digital solutions into their operations

The Middle East’s retail sector stands at a pivotal juncture, driven by shifting consumer behaviours, technological advancements and a heightened focus on sustainability. This evolution presents unparalleled opportunities to foster innovation, enhance customer engagement and contribute to broader environmental and economic goals.

However, this transition is not without its challenges. Industry leaders must address the complexities of balancing digital and physical retail experiences, navigating data privacy regulations and meeting the rising demand for sustainable practices.

One key trend that is picking up pace is the need for more seamless omnichannel experiences. While digital innovations such as artificial intelligence (AI)-driven personalisation, virtual try-ons and ‘phygital’ stores are gaining traction, physical stores remain essential to the region’s retail identity.

Consumers in the Middle East, particularly Generation Z (Gen Z), value in-person interactions while expecting the convenience of digital tools. This convergence highlights the need for hybrid models that cater to both experiential and transactional demands.

Equally crucial is the role of sustainability. Retailers are adopting eco-friendly packaging; reducing plastic waste; and launching environmental, social and governance (ESG)-driven initiatives. However, cost remains a significant barrier to consumer adoption and addressing this issue requires both regulatory support and innovative solutions to make sustainable choices more affordable and accessible.

Data privacy and consumer trust are also pivotal. As retailers increasingly leverage data to personalise services, they face growing scrutiny regarding compliance with privacy laws. Transparent practices and robust safeguards are essential to maintaining customer loyalty in an era of heightened regulatory focus.

In November 2024, Mashreq and MEED hosted a roundtable discussion that brought together industry leaders to explore these dynamics. This report captures the key insights and actionable strategies shared during the session, offering a roadmap for navigating the rapidly changing retail ecosystem and need for driving sustainable growth.
